Born in 1992 in Pune, Isha Pimpalkhare is a textile and mixed media artist currently based in Munich, Germany. Alongside her studio practice, she works as a Senior Colour and Material Designer at Designworks, the design innovation studio and think tank of the BMW Group. Formally trained in design, her work exists at the intersection of art and design, with a deep focus on the human relationship with the natural world.
Her primary technique is inspired by the age-old devoré method of lace-making, which involves the chemical burning of cellulosic fibers. She works with 100% cotton fabric, extensively stitched with polyester thread. The acid used in the process dissolves the cotton but leaves the polyester intact. What remains is a delicate mesh of threads connecting fragments of unburned cotton. More recently, she has also been working with kinetic textile sculptures — employing motors, hardware, and basic coding.
The artist lives and works out of Munich, Germany.
