Born 1948, Rini Dhumal grew up in Rongpur,  Bangladesh. After a Masters degree from the MS University, Vadodara, India, she rejoined the institute as a teacher in the latter half of her life. During her time at the university, Rini was fortunate to work under great artists like KG Subramanyan and Krishna Reddy.

The central theme of Rini's work revolved around the power and indelible strength of women. A lot of her works had its roots in the principles of prints. She perfectly managed to create beauty by aesthetic standards while making it possible to deliver a message at the same time. Popularized by her ‘Devi’ paintings, Rini spoke in multiple interviews of how her muse was the idea of a woman, a shakti image, which is evident in her paintings, demonstrating the power and the strong nature of women by virtue of the life that society serves them. Her ‘Devi’ paintings represented particular details pertaining to the mythological aspect of goddesses. The brilliance and mastery of colours portrayed in her works managed to make her statement direct and clear to her audience.

Some of her notable shows include Shakti, Tales of the Prophetess, The Santiniketan, Wounds, among others. The artist has received many awards and scholarships such as Chancellor's Gold Medal 1972, Governors Gold Medal, Calcutta 1974 Govt. of India Cultural Scholarship, worked under Prof. K G Subramaniam 1973-75, French Govt. Scholarship, worked under Sir S W Hayter at “Atelier 17” and many more.

The artist passed away in 2021.
